3. Project objectives:

The sub-region of southern Kon River is the area to grow rice and sugar canes for Binh Dinh Sugar Factory. So far there is no large-scale irrigation work availbale to meet the demand for irrigation in the region. The construction of the Thuong Son system of gravity irrigation canals is envisaged to meet the demand for irrigation in the region, bringing about sustainable development by effectively utitilizing the sources of water for paddy and sugar-cane fields, thus contributing to job creation, improvement of living standard, poverty reduction for the local people.

An investment to develop the irrigation network makes it possible to expand the arable land and to increase the crop-yield, ensuring the workable gravity irrigation for 3,500ha under cultivation at the communes of Tay Thuan, Tay Giang, Binh Tuong, Tay Phu, Tay Xuan and Binh Nghi of Tay Son district.

4. Project scale:

Major construction works: To construct a lifting dam at Ca spring. The dam is to be constructed of reinforced concrete with sluice gate, 24.2m in length, 3.3m in height and a flood-flow rate 270m³/s.

Water intake: consisting of two gates in the open air, constructed of reinforced concrete. The left gate carries water into Canal 1 and the right one into Canal 2.

The canal system and its structures: consisting of two canals with a toal length of 112km, providing irrigation for 3,500 ha.
