Binh Dinh calls for investment to produce non-toxic
insecticide and pesticide
4
December
2007
Binh Dinh, 30 Nov - Vice Chairman Le Huu Loc of Binh Dinh Province
(sitting, left) met with Dr Nguyen Son Truc (standing), a Vietkieu
Research Fellow of the Queensland University, Australia, on the
possibility to produce bentonite-based insecticide and pesticide
non-toxic to human beings, domestic animals and livestock. Leaders of
the relevant departments, companies and universities in the province
joined the meeting.

According
to Dr Son Truc, bentonite belongs to clays group which is present in Lam
Dong and Binh Dinh Provinces. After being modified to alter its surface
and chemical characteristics, it will be connected to a non-toxic
insecticide named Terpinene-4-ol which is extracted from Melaleuca
alternifolia (Australian tea tree oil) or lemon myrtle oil, citral
(backhousia citriodora), even with lemon grass (easy to growth in
Vietnam for large scale production) with nanotechnology. The new
substance can kill almost all insects and pests or expellant. This
result is achieved by Dr Truc and his colleagues in the Australian
Institute of Biochemical Engineering & Nanotechnology (Australian
Research Council Centre for exellence functional nanomaterials), the
University of Queensland. Some factories are now underway in China to
produce these insecticide and pesticide. If possible, BioAust Pty Ltd, a
big company from Australia, will come to Binh Dinh to investigate the
investment conditions.

Mr Loc
said that agriculture is the major economic sector in Binh Dinh Province
and in Vietnam generally. Therefore, hi-tech and non-toxic insecticide
and pesticide are now in great need. Once used, thay can help both
increase the productivity and prevent environmental pollution and
protect human health. Binh Dinh’s authority welcomed and would do its
best to facilitate the project in the province, Mr Loc said. The Vice
Chairman asked Dr Truc to invite his colleagues and the authorized
representatives of BioAust Pty Ltd to Binh Dinh for further discussion
and site visit.
